UK Government publishes Net Zero Strategy

On 19 October, the UK Government published the “Net Zero Strategy: Build Back Greener”, a document which sets out policies and proposals for decarbonizing all sectors of the UK economy to meet the net zero target by 2050.

Raw materials play a relevant role in this strategy, which states that, for the UK to achieve the net zero target, it will increasingly use certain CRMs, such as lithium, graphite, and cobalt. For this reason, it will be necessary to create strong supply chains and provide new economic opportunities.

Other activities set out in the strategy include:

  • working side-by-side with industry and international partners to safeguard CRM supply chains

  • supporting the engagement of the UK’s mining sector in new and existing markets, facilitating investment and collaboration in extraction and processing opportunities

  • setting up an Expert Committee on Critical Minerals to provide independent advice to the Government on the scope and content of a CRM strategy

  • setting up a Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre to provide analysis on stocks and flows to guide Government’s decision-making

  • publishing a UK Critical Minerals strategy 2022
