The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy published its draft report on the Implementation of the Updated New Industrial Strategy for Europe.
The own-initiative opinion called "Implementation of the Updated New Industrial Strategy for Europe: aligning spending to policy", led by rapporteur Tom Berendsen (EPP, Netherlands) highlights the following issues:
First, the rapporteur acknowledges that European cooperation between industry, universities and other educational institutions, research & innovation entities and governments are crucial in order to roll out the needed infrastructure and develop the necessary breakthrough technologies to produce everyday necessities such as clean steel.
Second, the report highlights the need to engage in ‘Energy Diplomacy’ with other countries to ensure for instance supply of synthetic fuels. The European Union has to regain a strong position in crucial global value chains and secure the supply of CRMs in times of crisis.
Lastly, a defensive toolbox is needed to maintain the level playing field of European industry on our own market, combat disruptive foreign subsidies, prevent unfair competition of foreign state subsidised companies and protect crucial European sectors and technologies.
The following Committees were appointed for opinions: INTA, IMCO, TRAN and REGI. The adoption at ITRE is scheduled for 27 June 2022
